Kolbusz Space: A working studio in Perth's Claisebrook

Kolbusz Space is at 2 Gladstone Street in Perth's Claisebrook precinct, WA 6000. Artist Waldemar Kolbusz runs the place, which opened in 2019 inside a converted industrial building. It serves as both an exhibition space and working studio. The location's pretty handy, just 2 kilometres from Perth's CBD and close to the Graham Farmer Freeway. If you're catching transport, Claisebrook station is only 150 metres away with direct trains into the city.

Claisebrook's changed a fair bit. You get old industrial buildings mixed in with newer creative spaces now. Pop down Gladstone Street and you'll find cafes like Sayers Little Brother and Teeter Bakery, vintage fashion at Milk and Honey, plus various other creative outfits through the Claisebrook Design Community. Kolbusz Space is part of Perth's broader shift to transform these industrial areas into somewhere people actually want to hang out. Galleries, independent shops, and design studios are bringing the inner city back to life.

What's on the walls

Kolbusz Space rotates through a focused lineup of shows featuring work across all sorts of contemporary mediums. You'll find painting, photography, neon, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, abstract pieces, and new media works. Each exhibition brings something different to the space. One month might feature large sculptural installations or a photography series, the next could be abstract paintings or digital work. Rather than fixate on one style or medium, the gallery stays open to whatever contemporary artists are actually doing.

The space is pretty selective about who shows there. The curators pick artists with genuine skill and something worthwhile to say through their work. That means the exhibitions feel intentional rather than scattered. Want to stay in the loop? You can jump on the mailing list through the website or follow them on Instagram and Facebook. Opening hours change with the exhibition schedule, but you can always organise a visit outside regular times if you ring ahead.

Ways to Buy and Flexible Payment Options

Kolbusz Space keeps a substantial stockroom of works both online and on-site. You can buy outright, lease, or use their lease-to-buy scheme. The thinking here is straightforward: collectors have different situations. Some are fresh to art, others are seasoned. Some have cash, others don't. Some want to commit to a piece, others want to try it out first. The lease-to-buy option lets you live with something and get to know it before you decide to keep it, without dropping plenty of money upfront.

{"text":"Their team offers tailored advice for all kinds of projects, whether it's starting from scratch or fitting out a whole property. They'll work with you on budget, offer vouchers and gift registries, and handle delivery and installation anywhere across Australia or overseas. So it's not just a gallery where you walk around and look at things. It's more of a hands-on partner in the whole business of acquiring art. This comes in handy if you're new to contemporary work or you're not sure how to make a particular piece work in your space."}.

Community Engagement and Cultural Stewardship

Kolbusz Space works to help artists build sustainable careers and improve how contemporary art functions in Perth. The gallery sees direct community involvement as key to attracting new collectors and opening up conversations between artists, collectors, and the public. Rather than just selling work, they offer mentoring and knowledge-sharing. Operating as both a studio and project space, they're involved in the actual production and presentation of contemporary art, not just the commercial side.

The gallery recognises the Whadjuk Noongar people as the traditional carers of the land where it's based. This reflects the idea that art matters for community health and wellbeing, including support for Indigenous cultural practices. Interested in what's coming up?
