About Sutton Gallery

Three Decades of Contemporary Art on Fitzroy's Gallery Strip

Sutton Gallery has occupied its Brunswick Street premises in Fitzroy since 1992, keeping a steady presence in one of Melbourne's longstanding creative hubs. The gallery sits on Wurundjeri land and acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation as the original inhabitants of these lands, where Aboriginal creative and material practice spans over 60,000 years. Sutton Gallery respectfully recognises the ancestors and Elders past and present connected to this place.

{"text":"Over thirty years, the gallery has gathered a strong roster of contemporary artists from Australia and New Zealand. It puts on monthly exhibitions featuring solo and group shows that take artistic rigour seriously, giving space to a range of different creative approaches. Being on Brunswick Street puts it right in Fitzroy's cultural quarter, so it's easily accessible to collectors hunting for work and to locals simply wandering through the neighbourhood's galleries."}.

What the artists show at Sutton Gallery

You'll find abstract work, figurative pieces, landscapes, portraits, still lifes and photography on their walls. The gallery backs this kind of range because it reckons there's more than one way to ask interesting visual questions. Look at what their artists have actually done: photographer Simon Terrill got his work turned into billboards around Maribyrnong, using photography to dig into representation and belonging. Painter Rachael Robb put out a solo show called In Time that explored trompe l'oeil in pretty sophisticated ways, playing with how surfaces work and how illusion gets made.

The people Sutton Gallery supports do well beyond just their own shows. Mia Khin Boe made it as a finalist in a major landscape art prize. Painter Nusra Latif Qureshi got work into serious institutions, including the Victoria and Albert Museum's Rising Voices: Contemporary Art from Asia, Australia and the Pacific exhibition. These sorts of wins say something about how the gallery picks artists and how it helps them get their work out into the world, well past just Melbourne.

Exhibitions, Programs and Community Engagement

Sutton Gallery runs a monthly exhibition program that gives both emerging and established artists a proper go at showing their work. The regular schedule keeps things moving and gives visitors reasons to come back throughout the year. Beyond the gallery itself, there's Sutton Projects, which pushes artist practice further out into the broader cultural conversation. The gallery also plays a real part in helping artists get into external shows and competitions, creating genuine opportunities for recognition.

The way Sutton Gallery programs its shows strikes a balance between serious curatorial thinking and making art accessible to people. By keeping the exhibition schedule steady and nurturing proper relationships with artists, other curators, and cultural organisations, the gallery has become a genuine fixture in Melbourne's contemporary art world. Whether it's solo presentations or group shows, the space works as a place where real artistic discussion happens and the public can engage seriously with what contemporary artists are doing.
