About LON Gallery
LON Gallery: Contemporary Art in Richmond
LON Gallery started as a grassroots, artist-run non-profit back in 2016. What opened as a project focused on emerging artists has developed into a serious venue for contemporary work. In 2019 they formalised their program structure, but kept the same commitment to supporting artists at all stages of their careers while maintaining strong curatorial thinking and community roots.
The gallery works with a range of artists and puts on thematic group shows that dig into different ideas and concepts. They're not just limited to Richmond either. LON shows regularly at off-site exhibitions and art fairs around the place. They're a member of the Gallery Climate Coalition and support Pay the Rent, which both tell you something about how they approach ethics and staying connected to their community. That stuff isn't separate from what they do. It shapes the shows they run and how they operate.
Abstract, Figurative and Conceptual Work
LON Gallery shows abstract, figurative, landscape, still-life and photography work. The space doesn't lock itself into one particular style. Instead, it looks for conceptual connections across different types of work. Through group shows with a theme or solo shows from emerging and mid-career artists, you get a chance to see pieces that push back against what you might expect from contemporary art. You could walk in and find an abstract composition next to figurative or still-life work that tells a personal story.
The artists showing here have picked up serious institutional support. Artbank, the City of Manningham, and other regional galleries have bought pieces from LON artists. Their work has appeared in Australia's major contemporary art spaces, which means the artists are part of broader conversations about visual culture. They've managed to do this while staying rooted in the Richmond gallery itself. That split between pushing forward and getting real institutional backing is what shapes LON's place in Melbourne's art world.
What's On and Artist Programming
LON Gallery regularly rotates through exhibitions across its roster of artists. Recent shows such as Grace Wood's Petal as Pixel give you a sense of where the gallery's head's at: artists working with the blur between natural forms and digital technology, and what that means for how we see things and understand pixels. The gallery's news feed is worth checking for details on new acquisitions, collaborations and work happening outside the space, which all help you stay connected with the artists and ideas they're invested in.
The gallery takes its exhibitions seriously as artistic exploration rather than just shifting stock. By keeping the program moving, they keep people engaged and build real relationships between the space, the artists and whoever comes through the door. Whether it's someone's first solo show or a major group exhibition, the work on offer has been thoughtfully selected and positioned within actual artistic conversations.
