About Flinders Lane Gallery

Homepage of Flinders Lane Gallery

A Melbourne Institution in the Historic Nicholas Building

Flinders Lane Gallery has called Level 1 of the Nicholas Building home since 1989, sitting right at the corner of Flinders Lane and Swanston Street. After more than three decades, the gallery has developed solid working relationships with Australian artists at every point in their careers, from those showing work for the first time through to established names whose pieces hang in major collections around the country and overseas. That kind of staying power isn't common in the gallery world. The Nicholas Building itself is part of what makes Flinders Lane Gallery tick. Built a century ago, it's full of artists' studios and creative spaces, which gives the place a real character you won't find in your standard white-walled contemporary gallery.

Walking through Flinders Lane Gallery feels different from most other venues around town. The building brings its own history, texture and community of makers into the experience of looking at the work on show. The gallery sits in central Melbourne and gets plenty of foot traffic: it's open Tuesday to Friday from 11am to 5pm, and Saturday from 11am to 5pm, though there can be changes on the last Saturday of exhibitions for pack-down. Located near major cultural precincts and transport links, it slots easily into a visit around Melbourne's visual arts scene.

Contemporary, Abstract, and Figurative Art Across Different Mediums

Flinders Lane Gallery works with artists doing serious contemporary work in painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and sculpture. They focus on abstract, figurative and semi-abstract painting particularly. The artists they represent have been picked because they make strong work with real craft and a distinct visual voice, not because they're flavour of the month. You'll see landscape, still life and non-representational work across their shows. Recent exhibitions have featured pieces by Kathrin Longhurst, Julie Davidson and others, which gives you a pretty good sense of what they're interested in.

{"text":"The gallery is a signatory to the Indigenous Art Code and works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, taking seriously the traditions and new directions in Indigenous Australian practice. They've got over three hundred pieces in the stockroom, which means the collection goes deep. Anyone looking for a painting for their place or a curator needing work for something bigger will usually find proper support here."}.

Rotating Exhibitions and Artist Recognition

Flinders Lane Gallery keeps a steady flow of exhibitions going, swapping out shows regularly to give artists space and try different ideas. They've had 'Entry Point' on recently, and coming up are Kathrin Longhurst's 'My Hand in Yours' (9-27 June 2026) and Julie Davidson's 'Symphony of Light' (30 June-25 July 2026). The artists FLG works with show up pretty often as finalists in major prizes, both here and overseas. The King's School Art Prize, the National Works on Paper Prize, the Fleurieu Art Prize and Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe all count FLG artists among their entrants. That track record says something about the calibre of artists the gallery supports and how much weight it carries in Australian contemporary art.

A Collector-Centric Approach to Living with Art

Flinders Lane Gallery keeps things pretty straightforward when it comes to art collecting. First-timers often find the whole business intimidating, and the gallery gets that. They work with all sorts of people: someone after a single painting for the lounge room, an interior designer hunting for pieces for a hotel or restaurant, a seasoned collector adding to their collection. Rather than pushing something off the wall, they listen to what you actually want. They'll spend time working out what your space is like, what draws you in aesthetically, what fits your budget. Then they'll suggest some options from the current shows or dig through the back stock to find something that could work.

The practical side matters too. You can see how a work might look in your own place before you commit to it. These bits of flexibility, plus the fact that the staff actually know their stuff and care about making it a decent experience, are what keep people coming back. You end up with real connections between the collectors, the gallery, and the artists whose work gets shown there.
