About Jan Manton Gallery
A leading contemporary gallery in Teneriffe's historic wool precinct
Jan Manton Gallery is located in Brisbane's Teneriffe neighbourhood within a restored section of the old wool store precinct. The gallery was founded in 2004 by Director Jan Manton and has grown to become an important venue for Australian and international contemporary art. From the start, it's been focused on supporting artists who are doing serious work in the visual arts. The heritage industrial architecture of this part of Brisbane gives the space real character, and the location puts the gallery right in the heart of the city's creative activity.
Director Jan Manton has considerable experience in the art world. She previously worked as Queensland Representative for Sotheby's and Deutscher Menzies Fine Art Auctioneers, which shapes how the gallery operates and the guidance it provides to collectors. She's an approved Valuer of Contemporary Australian Art under the Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program, offering valuations for insurance and helping both newcomers and established collectors navigate their collections. The gallery handles all collecting enquiries with confidentiality and professional care.
Abstract, expressionist and figurative work by emerging and established artists
Jan Manton Gallery shows contemporary work across painting, prints and sculpture, with a focus on abstract and expressionist pieces. The artists represented come from both Australia and overseas, each bringing their own angle to what they do. The gallery puts its weight behind work that's about form, gesture and emotional intensity rather than prettiness or decoration. The crowd you'll find here tends to be people who actually collect and care about art's conceptual and emotional side.
The gallery actively supports emerging artists through representation and career development. If you're an artist, you can submit work by sending images, a CV and a statement about your practice. Jan Manton herself is Vice-Chair of Flying Arts Alliance and Vice-Chair of the Queensland Children's Hospital Arts Program. She's also been involved in establishing the Bryan-Manton Art Prize for QUT Visual Art Graduates, which helps support emerging artists at an important point in their careers.
Exhibition openings, artist talks and panel discussions
Jan Manton Gallery puts exhibitions to work as proper opportunities for artists, collectors and visitors to talk things through. You're not just standing around looking at work, you can come to artist talks, exhibition openings and panel discussions. The idea is to help people actually understand what contemporary artists are doing, meet them face to face and build up some real knowledge about collecting. The gallery reckons contemporary art needs people talking about it and engaging with it to do well.
The gallery runs an ArtSpace venue in Teneriffe too, and keeps a stockroom where you can see and buy work. This gives people several ways to find and get hold of art. Standard hours are Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, and Saturday, 10am to 3pm. If you want to visit outside those times or need a private viewing, ring and set up an appointment.
Expert guidance for collectors and corporate acquisitions
Jan Manton Gallery helps collectors get their head around art buying with practical, no-nonsense advice. The team knows the ins and outs of collecting because of Jan's years working at major auction houses, which means they understand what actually matters when you're picking up your first piece or managing a serious collection. They're equally comfortable helping corporate clients sort out acquisitions. If you're curious about art at any stage, the gallery's happy to have a chat.
