About Mason Gallery
A Darwin gallery with three decades of connections to Indigenous artists
Mason Gallery is at Shop 7, 21 Cavenagh Street in Darwin City, on Larrakia country. The gallery recognises the Larrakia people as Traditional Owners of the Darwin region and has worked with the local community since 1997. It started after Reg and Debra Mason spent 20 years in Arnhem Land, where they built genuine relationships with local clans. That actually mattered. They became trusted members of those communities, which meant they could access work that was truly exceptional. These days their children Vicki and Tony run the place, building on what their parents had started. Reg wanted to be a leading supplier of quality Aboriginal art, and the gallery's still pursuing that.
The collection pulls from across the country's best art regions. Western Arnhem Land, the Central Australian Western Desert, Utopia in the Eastern Desert, and the broader Top End all contribute work. Tony Mason moved to Alice Springs in 2001 and stays there, so he keeps the Darwin gallery connected to what's happening inland. As a member of The Aboriginal Art Association of Australia, Mason Gallery operates within an industry structure that supports Indigenous artists and works toward a sustainable, inclusive visual arts sector. You can see that commitment reflected in what's on the walls.
Sculptures, carvings, and paintings from multiple Aboriginal traditions
Mason Gallery stocks work across several forms and regions. You'll see ironwood carvings like Maria Munkara's owls from the Tiwi Islands, finished with natural ochres in the traditional way. Paintings cover abstract, landscape, and narrative styles that draw on Dreaming stories and how today's artists respond to them. There's also weavings, cushion covers, giftware, and larger pieces that have headed to museums and public collections across Australia and overseas. The work speaks for itself because it comes from genuine cultural knowledge and solid artistic practice.
{"text":"The artists represented here have real standing, with pieces in major institutions. Mason Gallery sources directly from artists and communities, which matters if you care about doing this properly. The collection includes large canvases by Western Desert painters, carved pieces from the Tiwi Islands, and smaller works for homes or offices. It's been built up over years of knowing people and respecting their work."}.
Collections, rotation, and design guidance for every collector
{"text":"Mason Gallery runs thematic series that actually help people get to grips with the work. The 'Interior Design Inspirations' series demonstrates how significant pieces function in homes and commercial settings. They've got a 'New Arrivals' section that keeps the stock rotating for collectors and designers on the hunt for something different. The gallery moves beyond the typical gallery setup because lots of people walk in wanting solid advice on how to live with Aboriginal art in their own places. The range of prices and mediums is massive, spanning small giftware, large canvases and carved pieces. First-time buyers and seasoned collectors alike will find something to suit."}.
At its heart, the approach rests on the idea that Aboriginal art should be celebrated, kept alive, and shared properly. The rotating displays and mix of established and emerging artists mean the space constantly shifts, so if you're a regular you'll always spot something fresh. Mason Gallery also handles wholesale and retail enquiries, which makes them useful for designers, hospitality businesses, and institutions wanting to support Indigenous artists and pick up work that carries real cultural and aesthetic weight.

Real relationships with artists and communities
Mason Gallery works directly with artists and communities across Arnhem Land, the Central Desert, and the Top End. Aboriginal art here isn't just something to hang on a wall. Each piece carries cultural knowledge, spiritual meaning, and contemporary expression from the artists who made it. Money from sales goes straight back to the artists and their communities. The gallery's membership in The Aboriginal Art Association of Australia reflects this commitment to fair dealing, as does its recognition of Traditional Ownership and Larrakia cultural authority.
You'll find genuine work here if you're after Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. Some people come to build a collection, others source pieces for design projects, and plenty just want to engage with art that comes from Australia's distinctive traditions. The gallery offers real access to the creativity and cultural knowledge of Indigenous artists. When you buy from Mason Gallery, you're connecting with a story that begins in remote communities and spreads across Australia and globally.
