Contemporary Southeast Asian Art in Newtown

It's located at 16 Albermarle Street in Newtown and has become a proper destination for anyone keen on the region's art scene. John Cruthers, an Australian art adviser with serious credentials, opened it in 2019. The space operates by appointment only, so visits tend to be quiet and personal rather than crowded. Newtown's cultural density helps too, the suburb already attracts collectors, curators, artists and people who just care about art, so the location makes sense.

Cruthers spent decades in contemporary art before starting the gallery. His focus on southeast Asian work opened in 2013, and he's been travelling through the region ever since, meeting artists and learning what they're on about. He wanted to bring those connections back and share them with people here. It's not just a viewing space though. The gallery runs education programs, public events and cultural exchange activities that actually engage with the work on offer.

Curatorial Focus: Abstract, Figurative and Contemporary Narratives

The gallery works with contemporary, abstract, figurative and expressionist artists from southeast Asia. These artists engage with weighty themes. Mythology, ritual, identity and cultural transgression recur throughout the program. Recent exhibitions have moved past conventional boundaries, involving large-scale screenprint projects that demanded custom fabrication and experimental printing methods. The curatorial practice questions what viewers assume about 'otherness' and how cultures tell their stories.

A strong case is the *Pasar Malam | Night Market* exhibition, developed with Krack! Print Studio in Yogyakarta. It brought 15 Indonesian and Australian artists together to produce large-format screenprints about the transgressive nature of Indonesian night markets, where mysticism, mythology and illicit desire converge. Each print measured 200 by 150 centimetres, made through a collaborative method that pushed screenprinting's technical and conceptual possibilities.

Beyond Exhibitions: Education, Tours and Professional Engagement

The gallery offers public programs, educational resources and art study tours to southeast Asia that go well beyond a single visit, giving people real insight into the region's contemporary art scene. They also show at Sydney Contemporary, which keeps the gallery connected to Australia's broader art market. These initiatives come straight from Cruthers' vision of helping Australian audiences actually engage with southeast Asian artists and their work, rather than just looking at it once and moving on.

Learning about contemporary southeast Asian art isn't something you can rush. You need the history, the context, the cultural and political background, and some technical knowledge to really make sense of it. 16albermarle tries to sort that by running structured tours and public programs and providing carefully selected resources. A visit stops being a quick trip through a space and becomes a proper starting point for understanding what's on the walls.

Building Collections and Supporting Southeast Asian Art

John Cruthers has spent decades building and championing art collections. Starting in 1974, he worked with his mother Sheila Cruthers to assemble the Cruthers Collection of Women's Art, Australia's largest standalone collection of women's art, which they donated to the University of Western Australia in 2007. Since 1985, he's advised Australian private collectors on acquiring significant contemporary work.
