Canberra Contemporary: A Key Contemporary Arts Space in Parkes

Canberra Contemporary is a major independent gallery for contemporary visual arts, located in Parkes, Canberra's cultural hub. It's been part of the ACT's art world since 1981, operating from 44 Queen Elizabeth Terrace. For over 40 years, the gallery has supported emerging and ambitious artists working across different media. It's become the go-to spot for anyone serious about contemporary art practice in the region.

The gallery runs two separate spaces across town. The main space in Parkes handles the main exhibition programme, while Platform on Furneaux Street in Manuka functions as a more experimental project space. Both are free to visit during exhibitions. The Parkes location is open Tuesday to Saturday, and Platform runs Friday to Sunday. Running two venues gives the gallery more room to expand what it shows and lets artists try different approaches to how they present their work.

Exhibition Programme Across Contemporary, Abstract and Figurative Practice

Canberra Contemporary puts on exhibitions that cover the full range of contemporary visual arts. The gallery regularly shows ambitious installations and innovative work in abstract, figurative and conceptual forms. Past and upcoming shows include 'Paradise*' curated by Dan Toua, 'Unkempt Cognition' by Ella Barclay, 'Masked Memory' by Rosalind Lemoh and 'DEEP END' by Amy Claire Mills. These works highlight artists willing to challenge conventions and engage with pressing issues in contemporary art. Beyond the gallery space, the Platform Mural Project extends this work into the streetscape, bringing contemporary visual practice into public view.

Throughout the year, Canberra Contemporary pairs exhibitions with artist talks, public programs and publications that link the work to what's happening in Australian and international art right now. This means visitors see the art as part of a wider conversation about where culture is heading, who the new voices are, and what established artists are exploring. By working across different disciplines and perspectives, the gallery creates a space where emerging and established artists can develop and test new ideas, sharing their work with audiences genuinely invested in what they're making. Supporting Artists Through Mentoring and Residencies

Canberra Contemporary does more than hang finished artworks on walls. The gallery runs mentoring programmes and residencies to help artists develop their practice, including the 2026 Artists in Residence programme that gives artists space and time to work on new ideas. These programmes matter because they help artists grow at crucial points in their careers and let the gallery get involved in the messy, experimental side of art-making rather than just presenting polished results. The work feeds back into Canberra's visual arts community and makes it stronger.

{"text":"The gallery accepts exhibition applications from artists too, keeping the door open for different kinds of programming. This combination of support at all levels, for starting-out artists and established ones alike, makes Canberra Contemporary a proper creative space. Artists can test ideas, work alongside peers and curators, and build networks there.

Community Engagement and Cultural Leadership in Canberra

Canberra Contemporary is part of Contemporary Arts Organisations Australia (CAOA), a national network of independent organisations testing new ideas in contemporary visual arts. Being in this network means Canberra audiences get access to what's actually happening at the cutting edge of Australian contemporary art right now. The Australian Government backs the organisation through Creative Australia, recognising its role in the national arts sector.

{"text":"The gallery keeps all exhibitions free to enter, so cost doesn't stop anyone from visiting. People can get more involved through membership, donations, volunteering or sponsorships. By offering these different ways in, Canberra Contemporary builds a genuine cultural community around contemporary visual arts and opens up conversations about artistic innovation and what culture means. Every visitor, whether dropping by for a single show or becoming a regular, participates in those conversations about Canberra's creative future.
