About ANCA Dickson: Gallery, Studios, Administration

ANCA Gallery: A Hub for Contemporary Art in Dickson

The Australian National Capital Artists Incorporated (ANCA) runs Canberra's biggest affordable studio spaces for visual artists. Set up in 1989, it was the first artist-run operation in the region offering affordable studios and exhibition rooms. That initial idea has stuck around and grown over the past thirty years. ANCA runs two studio campuses these days, one at Rosevear Place in Dickson and another at Hoskins Street in Mitchell. The Dickson location has the public ANCA Gallery as well as the organisation's main offices.

The gallery at 1 Rosevear Place is where a lot of Canberra's art scene happens. It's free to visit and shows work from local artists, both the well-established ones and people just starting out. The whole setup reflects what ANCA is actually about: giving visual artists a real chance to work and show their stuff, while also giving the Canberra community somewhere decent to see contemporary art.

Diverse Artistic Practices: From Printmaking to Abstract and Surrealism

ANCA Gallery shows a pretty wide range of contemporary art. You'll see everything from well-crafted printmaking to abstract pieces, figurative work and pop art. The gallery supports a mix of studio artists and visiting practitioners who all seem keen to try new things. Recent shows have ranged across different media and styles, with artists tackling everything from photogravure and screen printing to etching and mixed media. A lot of the work engages with personal and political ideas, often using experimental techniques to tackle big questions in fresh ways.

The current show, Feels like End Times, But We're Still Printing, is a good example of what ANCA does. It features five local printmakers from the collaborative group Five Ink, combining surrealist elements with pop art humour and layered imagery. The work deals seriously with climate change, political anxiety and what it means to keep going. Pieces range from delicate photogravures through to boldly patterned screen prints, with nods to Magritte, Dadaism and the 1980s Canberra poster scene. The whole thing shows how ANCA supports artists willing to take risks and combine traditional techniques with ideas that feel urgent and contemporary.

Artist-Run Ethos: Community, Accessibility and Creative Support

What makes ANCA different is that artists actually run the place. The board includes practising studio artists, so decisions come from people who know what it's like to be making work day in, day out. That's how ANCA became the ACT's biggest provider of affordable studio space. Artists here get secure, cheap workspace where they can collaborate and keep developing their practice, whether they're just starting out or well established. The organisation stays accountable through regular audits and detailed reports to members, keeping things transparent.

ANCA runs two connected sites: Dickson Studios and Gallery, plus Mitchell Studios. Artists across both spaces share equipment, swap ideas, and actually get to know each other. The gallery opens its doors free to the public and runs programs that bring Canberrans in to meet the artists working here. Exhibitions, openings and special events mean different voices get heard and supported. It strengthens the artist community itself and adds real value to Canberra's arts scene.
